After eight days, 648km of riding and 15 475m of climbing, Matt Beers and Christopher Blevins (Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne) emerged as victors of the 2023 Absa Cape Epic at Val de Vie Estate in Paarl.
In the CM.com Women’s category, Vera Looser and Kim le Court (Efficient Infiniti Insure) reigned supreme as the 2023 Champions. More than 750 teams of 2 (1500 riders) started alongside these champions to take on the Untamed African MTB Race.
In addition to the hotly contested racing, the weather conditions at this year’s Cape Epic also made headlines as wind and rain wreaked havoc . First the strong winds in Hermanus had riders battling to stay upright while tents in the race village snapped or went flying and spectators were sent running for cover.
When the winds died down, heavy rain battered the race causing extremely muddy conditions and adding an extra layer of challenge deep into a race that was already long, even by Cape Epic standards.
It’s fair to say everything was thrown at the Teams that raced the 2023 Absa Cape Epic but the diversity of challenges also meant they could reap the full benefits of Squirt Cycling Products’ presence at the race. A whopping 4 562 litres of Squirt Biodegradable BikeCleaner was used to keep machines clean, and 1032 bottles of Squirt Chain Lube was applied at water points alone to keep drivetrains running smooth.
For obvious reasons data is a little scarce on this but we are also willing to bet a fair amount of Barrier Balm anti-chafe cream was used during the long days spent in the saddle.
Squirt Cycling Products continues as Epic Series partner, providing Bike Care Products to riders as they take on the challenge of these events all over the globe.
