Richard Murray, Squirt Cycling Ambassador, took top honours at the 2024 Huatulco World Triathlon Cup a couple of weeks ago and with it he secured a spot on the Dutch National Olympic team. It will be his fourth Olympics, a testament to his class and longevity.
We caught up with the South Africa born triathlete to find out how this young boy, who grew up on a farm just outside Durbanville, became an Olympic athlete.
Who is Richard Murray?
I grew up on a farm in Rondekuil, just outside of Durbanville, Cape Town. Running, cycling, and being outdoors were part of my upbringing. I was always out doing sports and loved it growing up on a farm. When I was a teenager, I started participating in cycling events and duathlons, and I was doing a whole bunch of different events. It wasn’t long before the multisport bug bit and I was hooked.
I went to both Paul Roos and Fairmont High Schools and went to study sports coaching and conditioning at ETA Stellenbosch after school.
After this, I decided to try triathlon professionally. I made my professional debut in 2010, and 14 years later, I’m still competing. I have participated in four Olympic Games and achieved numerous top-step podiums throughout my career. It’s really been an amazing 14 years.
Where is home?
I reside in both Durbanville, South Africa, and Beuningen, Netherlands. I live in two countries, but I changed from racing for South Africa to the Netherlands in 2022.
